Outpatients on screen

Accessible content for
time-poor users

The Tasmanian Government Health Service’s Outpatient Clinic site is used mainly by busy doctors seeking to refer patients for specialist treatment. It was designed to be fast, easy to use and accessible to a wide range of users.

The finished site has improved the quality and consistency of the referrals received from medical practitioners, which has helped deliver effective patient triage.

We studied a range of sites in our research phase to harvest good approaches from those who had designed in similar spaces. We also looked closely at the design principles behind the UK Government’s website gov.uk, which is recognised as reflecting the best-practice in usability and information design.

Gov.uk have published an enormous amount of open source research and rationale on their design thinking and user testing results.

We have applied many of their techniques and recommendations to make every element in this site serve the content and user. This thinking influences everything from tone of voice, and image selection, to text hierarchy, link style and colour.

The colours, linking, over states all reflect W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) to AA standard and the site is fully responsive and usable on a range of devices.
